Candle making at home for beginners

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Before you start making candles, you will need to gather all the necessary supplies. Here are the supplies you will need:

Step 2: Prepare Your Workspace

It is essential to prepare your workspace before starting the candle-making process. Cover your workspace with newspaper or with aluminum foil to avoid any wax spills. Make sure your workspace is clean and dry.

Step 3: Melt the Wax

Melt the wax in a double boiler or a pot and a heat-resistant bowl. Heat the wax until it melts completely, and the temperature reaches between 160°F to 180°F. It is crucial to monitor the temperature using a thermometer to prevent overheating the wax.

Step 4: Prepare the Wick

While the wax is melting, prepare the wick.

  1. Peel off the backing: Carefully peel the backing off the wick sticker, exposing the adhesive side.
  2. Center the wick: Place the wick in the center of the wick sticker, making sure it is straight and aligned with the sticker.
  3. Press down: Press down firmly on the wick to ensure that it sticks to the sticker.
  4. Wipe the inner bottom of your candle jars with rubbing alcohol before placing the wick sticker, candle jars have dust at the bottom which makes it difficult for the wick sticker to hold onto the vessels. After thoroughly cleaning the inner bottom of the vessel, apply the wick sticker.
  1. Attach the wick to the container: Peel off the other side of the wick sticker and attach it to the bottom of the container. Press down firmly to ensure that the wick is securely attached.

 

Step 5: Add Fragrance and Dye (Optional)

Once the wax has melted, you can add fragrance oil and color dye to the wax. Stir the wax thoroughly to ensure the fragrance oil and color dye are evenly distributed. The amount of fragrance oil you use depends on how strong you want the scent to be.

Step 6: Pour the Wax

Slowly pour the melted wax into the container, making sure not to pour it too fast. Leave a small gap at the top of the container, about ½ inch from the top. Hold the wick in place while pouring the wax.

Step 7: Let the Candle Cool

Allow the candle to cool and solidify completely. This process may take several hours, depending on the size of the candle. Do not move the container while the wax is still hot and liquid.

Step 8: Trim the Wick

Once the candle has cooled, trim the wick to ¼ inch from the top of the candle. This will ensure a clean and even burn.

Tips

For best results, it is recommended to cure candles for at least 48 hours in a cool, dry place before burning them.
